In 2016, SSAB, partner of Geha Laverman, LKAB and Vattenfall launched: HYBRIT, a revolutionary collaboration in steel production. HYBRIT will replace coal, needed for the steel industry, with hydrogen. The result is the world's first fossil-free steel production technology, with negligible CO2-footprint.
Last year, the first pile was driven for the expansion of the SSAB plant in Lulea for the world's first-ever plant set up for fossil-free steel production. EUR 130 million (SEK 1.4 billion) is involved in building the plant and developing the new production method. The start-up phase will last until 2025, after which the technology will be rolled out at the current production facilities in Oxelösund, Sweden. After that, HARDOX will be the world's first high-strength steel produced entirely without fossil fuels.
Most durable steel in the world
The steel industry, around the world, is a huge energy consumer. With CO2-emissions as one of the main causes of global warming, this industry is rightly concerned. That precisely SSAB and mining company LKAB, as leading steel producers, decided to cooperate with energy provider Vattenfall is a happy development that will soon give HARDOX users the security of having chosen the most sustainably produced wear steel.
